Handmade History
Suzanne Barker
Owner, Old Santa Fe Inn
A fourth-generation New Mexico family owned bulwark of Santa Fe’s hospitality community is updated and reinvigorated with a design that pays homage to the history of the hotel and its community, while providing the comfort and understated luxury its guests demand. Handcrafted furniture and finishes, playing with and honoring Native, Mexican, and Spanish artistic styles and approaches, fill the public spaces and guest rooms. A palette of New Mexican colors—berry red, terracotta, chamisa yellow, denim blue, and turquoise—complement honey-colored wood and bronze metal finishes to create a warm, authentic, and uniquely contemporary historical space. A careful and nuanced understanding and respect for the deep cultural and aesthetic traditions of New Mexico’s capital city allows for a design that accentuates the hotel’s mission of providing, “beauty, warmth, and hospitality from a simpler time.”
